Fair Pay for Artists, a Symposium organized in Helsinki, Finland in September invites visual art professionals, organisations, audiences and decision-makers to discuss the income models of visual artists.
Exhibition payment, a remuneration for visual artists for presenting their works to the public, is an important topic in many European countries, advocated by artists' associations. Visual artists are still rarely paid for presenting their works in exhibitions or events, but change is coming.
Fair Pay for Artists, a Symposium organized in Helsinki, Finland and streamed digitally across the world, invites visual art professionals, organisations, audiences and decision-makers to discuss the income models of visual artists. The Symposium, taking place on Friday, 24 September 2021, will offer examples of different exhibition payment models in Europe and North America, and examine ways to change policy and legal frameworks both at local and European level. The event will provide concrete tools for advocacy work; implementing fair payment practices and securing the sustainability and recovery of the visual arts industry after the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Symposium includes international keynote speakers from the US, UK, Netherlands and Finland sharing experiences, knowledge, skills and stories. Speakers and details of how to sign up for the event will be published in Summer 2021. The Symposium is open for everybody and can be attended virtually or in person. Fair Pay for Artists: Exhibition Payment Symposium 2021 is co-hosted by the International Artists Association Europe (IAA Europe), the Artists’ Association of Finland and a-n The Artist Information Company. The event is followed by the IAA Europe General Assembly, also taking place in the fall of 2021. The Symposium is a follow-up for the Exhibition Remuneration Right in Europe 2018 Symposium organized by IAA Europe in Brussels.

International Artists Association Europe (IAA Europe), with its office based at the Slovak Union of Visual Arts (SUVA), is a network of visual art organisations aiming to improve the economic position of artists at a national and international level.
The Artists’ Association of Finland is an advocate and expert association representing over 3,000 professional artists in Finland. AAF promotes the status and working conditions of visual artists and strengthens the role of visual arts in society.
a-n The Artist Information Company is the largest artists’ membership organisation in the UK, representing more than 21,000 artists and arts organisers. We support and act on behalf of our membership and the visual arts sector to improve artists’ livelihoods, to inform cultural policy and to affirm the value of artists in society. Through our membership services, the delivery of a creative programme and advocacy, a-n champions the rights and voices of practising visual artists in the UK today. In 2021 a-n celebrates its 40th anniversary year with a dedicated programme of activity.
Thank you also to the Internationale Gesellschaft der Bildenden Künste (IGBK) for the support in preparation of the symposium. IGBK, based in Germany, is an organisation representing the interests of visual artists. IGBK fosters worldwide collaboration amongst visual artists in all directions.
